For Small Businesses, Smartphone Security Is As Important As PC Security

Although there aren’t any prevalent security attacks or threat mechanisms associated with smartphones in the market today, security vendors and analysts are urging mobile device users to use security best practices on them, just as they would with their computers.

With recent advancements around mobile devices and technologies, particularly smartphone devices, more and more people are staying connected both in the home and office environments.

Analysts at Forrester Research, a leading authority on security in the small business IT space, say the new breed of smartphones, such as Android and iPhone-based devices, are built on operating systems that are “fairly-well locked down.”

However, although they said using these types of devices are generally safer than PCs because malware can’t run on them (yet), there are still privacy and data risks to be aware of.

GPS hacking is just one concern – a rogue phone application sending your location to an outside service without your permission.

Privacy-related issues will emerge as third-party “fake” applications access more of your personal data.

These would be apps that look legitimate, but are designed to steal your personal information.

Fixing this type of issue will be simpler than a PC, though: The operators of the “app stores,” (Apple and Google) can find the offenders and remove them from the sites in a matter of minutes.

Security and privacy are a concern especially for users who bring and work with their personal devices in and out of the workplace.

The safety of the data on those devices becomes an even larger issue.

Smartphones allow business owners and employees to be more connected with each other. Users are sending information via e-mails and through attachments, all of which are susceptible to loss or theft.

Smartphones that are used for business communication should be treated like office PCs when it comes to data protection. The security threat is there – you have to protect the data that’s on the device.

One of the biggest security mistakes customers make with their mobile devices today is that they fail to use even the most basic security protection methods such as passwords.

Most users don’t set up passwords on their mobile device because they think of their smartphone as just a phone.

But really, it’s a small, low-power computer that happens to let you make phone calls, too.

For small business, it’s time to start thinking of smartphones as another entry into your business’ data. If they’re used for business communication, they need to be monitored, protected and updated just like a PC on your network that attaches to your server and financial data.

Should You Trust Every App You Install On Your Phone?

Nope — some of them are plundering your personal information and beaming it to potential bad guys. (Do hackers ever sleep?)

Two researchers revealed that they’d researched one seemingly benign wallpaper app and found that it was sending phone numbers and subscriber information (like names and addresses) to a remote computer.

The app in question came from Jackey Wallpaper, and it was uploaded to the Android Market, where users can download it and use it to decorate their phones that run the Google Android operating system.

It includes branded wallpapers from My Little Pony to Star Wars.

Essentially, these apps collect your phone number, subscriber identification, and even your voicemail phone number as long as they are programmed automatically into your phone. It sends the data to a website, www.imnet.us. That site is evidently owned by someone in Shenzhen, China. The app has been downloaded anywhere from 1.1 million to 4.6 million times.

“Apps that seem good, but are really stealing your personal information are a big risk at a time when mobile apps are exploding on smart phones,” said John Hering, chief executive, and Kevin MaHaffey, chief technology offi cer at Lookout, in their talk at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas. “Even good apps can be modifi ed to turn bad after a lot of people download it.”

 

What To Do When You Drop Your Cell Phone In Water

If you’ve ever been unlucky enough to drop your cell phone into water, take some solace in knowing you’re not alone.

Dropping a cell phone into the swimming pool, bathtub or toilet is such a common occurrence that some cell phone manufacturers include a sensor that will detect if it’s been submerged in water, so users can’t return them saying they are defective.

If it happens to you, it’s important to act quickly. First, don’t turn the phone on until it has been completely dried out or you’ll probably end up shorting out some circuits. Cell phone repair services recommend taking out the battery right away and wiping it off.

Shake out any excess moisture from the phone. Unfasten the screws and open up the device. Then use an electrical-contact cleaning spray or rubbing alcohol to remove corrosive moisture. When you think it’s completely dry, wait another day before turning it on.

There are a number of recommended drying techniques, but the key to all of them is to dry the phone as soon as possible.

One proven phone-drying method is to use a hair dryer set on cool. You don’t want to use high heat – that could cause even more damage to the phone.

Another method is to seal the phone in a jar with uncooked rice. The rice absorbs the moisture, but it does take a few days.

Most important: Make sure you always back up your smart phone! Most cell phone providers offer this service, and many phones come with software you can load on your computer to perform a backup using a USB cable.
